See Music, Hear Design (Obra Para Sa Musika by PSID's batch 2013)

Kundiman, opera, tribal, zarzuela, novelty, Pinoy pop – the Philippines has a rich musical history showcasing various genres and styles. This is the highlight of “OPM: Obra Para sa Musika” the graduation exhibit of the Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID) Advanced Class of 2013.

Marking the 46th anniversary of PSID, and co-presented by Glorietta mall, Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mangaawit (OPM), and the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (FILSCAP), this year’s exhibit aims to marry the interrelated fields of design and music by translating popular Filipino songs into aesthetically and functionally designed interior spaces.

The students were challenged to embody the tone and mood of their group’s assigned song and Filipino music in general and incorporate these into livable interior spaces. They researched not just on the basic design principles and ergonomics, but also on the background and story behind each song -- the characters, melodies, lyrics, composers and artists, and music genre.

Songs from different genres, traditional to modern, were used as inspiration for the different booths in the exhibit to showcase not just different design aesthetics but the richness and diversity of Filipino music. After visiting the exhibit, the audience is expected to have a renewed sense of appreciation for the beauty and exquisite musical heritage of our country as translated into the designs.

Slated on October 1-31, at the 3rd level of Glorietta 3, Ayala Center, Makati City, the exhibit showcases over 20 exquisitely designed spaces inspired by timeless Original Pilipino Music pieces.

MAMANG SORBETERO - Celeste Legaspi (ice cream shop)

This group had a dirty ice cream cart and gave away free ice cream during press day! So cool!

GROWING UP - Gary V. (teenager's room)

See the wall beside the bed? Those are actually stacks of magazines bound together and used as a soundproofing element for this space. Perfect for teens wanting to be in a band- they can rehearse with the band here. The grand piano study desk is also really cool! My sister would love this room.

KUMUKUTIKUTITAP - Ryan Cayabyab (candy store)

I felt like I was transported to Disneyland! This group took inspiration from a holiday store display in New York. Cute!

GABAY: Dibuhong Umaakay (1 of 2)

The PSID Graduating Batch of 2012 explore the healing properties of the home as they design livable spaces for the visually impaired, the hearing impaired, the orthopedically challenged and the elderly. They were given the challenge to design rooms that will assist these individuals in their habitats, assuring their safety whilst providing function, comfort and style.

GABAY: Dibuhong Ummakay centers on 23 different spaces divided in to four main areas:
TANAW (the visually impaired)
TINDIG (the orthopedically challenged)
DINIG (the hearing impaired)
GALAW (the elderly)

These spaces- living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, lanai and bathrooms- came to life in an ambiance of healing. While the special needs of these specific groups were taken into consideration and corresponding design solutions were applied, the focus of the exhibit is on how interior design can be palliative, therapeutic and restorative solution to make their life and lifestyle one of ease, comfort, style and beauty.

Booth 1: VISU CENTRIC LIVING ROOM

Lovin' that web of wood and mirror extending to the ceiling

Shelves light up when someone's at the door or when the phone's ringing.

Booth 2: MEMOIRS OF AUDREY (dining room)

Booth 3: REMNANTS

Don't you just love the oversized booth seating?

Different lights turn on for when the timer's up for the different appliances  (oven, toaster, etc.)

Booth 13: BEYOND SIGHT

Floor markings serve as guides

Nicely-done quote on the walls taken from the Little Prince done in braille- "What is essential is invisible to the eye." The color scheme is also inspired by the book!

Booth 14: BEYOND THE NAKED EYE

Booth 15: PHOSPHORESCENCE

The angles on the sides of the counters mark the center and act as guides for the visually-impaired user

LOVE the lines of light. The path markings made by the smooth and rough textured flooring look great, too.

Viewed the exhibit on press day with Aivan, who wore his print-on-print outfit really well. Oh, and see that induction stove? It's actually just glass marked with silver pens. Great DIY feature since the sponsor only allowed pull-outs for gas stoves.

MB x Claire Unabia-James at the Jak En Poy exhibit

I love how photogenic each booth at our exhibit is!

Two weeks ago, Manila Bulletin's Jere De Mc Cuttac contacted me so they could have a shoot at Jak En Poy with models Danica Magpantay and Claire Unabia from ANTM cycle 10! I was so excited to see them werq. Thanks to Aisa (fellow blogger who styled this shoot with Jere) I got to meet them and I'm proud to show you the photos they've produced out of the shoot.

Here's Claire's set for now...

what I do at the exhibit

We take turns in guarding our booth and I get to go thrice a week. I was obviously bored during my last shift since the visitors weren't asking questions about our design rationale and main materials anymore.

I took some photos before realizing that this may be the last time I'll be using my Lumix GF1.

Found decent and comfortable "walking shoes" at Pedro the other day. I needed a new pair for days when I have to run errands. I'm slowly trying to refrain from wearing TOMS everyday (but I still love them) since I'm no longer a uni/college girl. I love sandals with heels a bit higher than kitten heels (I could never wear those, they make me cringe).

I don't wear my sky-high heels on normal days since I'm a bit taller than the average Filipina and people get mad at me for wearing them. Plus of course, heels hurt when you have to walk/run/skip on the roads around here. I don't work in a carpet-laden office.

Yani was obviously bored, too. She gamely posed for me and did our "offering" pose, haha!
Sometimes I forget how nice the bokeh is from the 20mm pancake lens of the GF1.

Everyone loves the tall mirros in our booth. They're for sale (as well as our customized shelves) so contact me if you want to buy them!

My hair's getting longer. :)

❤❤❤

Recently cleaned up my blog a bit since I was getting tired of looking at colorful badges and endless links at the sidebar. I think I've lost touch of why I started this in the first place-- it's a mere documentation of my life and everything I like. I've always wanted it simple.

What's new:

  • I basically just added pages on top that includes my long list of links, FAQs + redirecting links to my Twitter/Formspring.
  • My other blog posts have a "read more" option so all the photos don't have to load when you're on the main site, but I still have to fix the spacing before and after that link
  • I've also added a search box and a drop-down list of categories to get rid of the annoying cloud of tags that I had. I still have to edit the tags on each post since some of them are unnecessary (the ones that only have one post attached to them).
  • Still have to fix the space in between each post. I'm not satisfied with the crowding of the text.
  • As much as I want to edit the template, I can't let go of the all-white background and placement of the side bar on the right. I might change my banner if ever I take a decent monochromatic photo of myself. Or should I just make it a huge "raleene.com" header?
I'll stop right here since I don't want to badger you all with these things about the whole look of the site!

Anyways, I really just want to tell you all that I am trying to get myself to post better photos! I am hating myself for leaving my camera behind, but then again I've been really busy with school-related events that just keeps me from going around taking photos. I hope you all understand.

I am also excited about getting a new camera! My brother's getting my old micro 4/3s Lumix GF1 since he's taking photography lessons in school (I know, they offer it in my high school now. How unfair!) and he needs a "decent" one. I can't let go of my DSLR since it's my first baby and the my first purchase ever since I started earning when I first came here for college.

I'm getting an Olympus PEN E-P3. (photo isn't mine)
Thank God for online shopping! I can't wait to get my newest baby!

Jak En Poy: a sneak peek of our exhibit!- EXTENDED TIL NOV. 6!

I'm so happy about all the positive feedback our exhibit's been getting from the first few who've seen the booths during the alumni association party and press day.

As much as I want it to remain a surprise, my batch mates have been bugging me to blog about it already. Keep in mind that these photos do not do justice to the beauty of each booth! You really have to visit our exhibit. I'm not putting detail shots from each room so you all have something to look forward to when you decide to visit next month.  :)

PSIDAA + KYSS

Last Saturday the PSID Alumni Association had their first gathering/party at our exhibit! I don't have any photos from the event since we had to entertain questions from the previous batches. They had to vote for the best booth!

Stole some photos from other people and I have some from the photo booth. We finally got to dress up!

I'm a paranoiac in reverse.

Hallo, friends.

Blogging backlog, yes I know. I have tons to share with you all- can't wait to post about them soon... I'll make up for it once our construction load's been lightened, I promise!

Anyways, here's a bit off the past 7 days (I've been a total bore so I guess you'll have to settle for this).

The night before we got ill...

As you all know, I've been busy with my thesis this month and I've been overseeing our booth at the construction site everyday along with my group mates. We've hit the 6th day of the actual construction today, and so far it's been going well. I just can't explain to you how damaging it is to the body since our 1,200-sqft. hall is more like a concrete box with no windows, keeping in all the sawdust, paint and fumes inside with only a small opening for the entrance to let all of that out. We guard our booth for a total of 14 hours a day, with one-hour breaks for lunch and dinner. For most of the batch, it's their first time to experience the REAL world of interior design and even if it's the total opposite of glamour and fun, it's so amusing and quite fulfilling to watch our room getting built-up.

I picked up some sort of virus circulating around the site and I may have passed it to my beau (oops) during his 7-day stay here in Manila before he had to fly back to America. Our time together was basically spent trying to recuperate and do absolutely nothing but drink meds & fluids, chew on nasty lozenges... Plus we managed to bore ourselves to death with the telly.

This week marked our 2nd year anniversary and we've been planning to have some sort of celebration even before he came back for the summer. I knew I could leave all the planning to him since he thinks it's the guy's job, but he also knows that I never want him to spend so much for anything unnecessary. I just want some time for us to talk, have dinner. I hate flowers (am I the only one who thinks they're useless?) and those over-the-top cheesy gestures. They make me shiver.

The plan was to have dinner at a Japanese restaurant in Makati (Robot? HAHA!), but since we were SO sick that day- 39C fevers, mad tonsillitis, shivers, the works- he had to move the 6:00PM meeting time to 7:45 so he could "get checked by a doctor". I was so thankful that he moved the time since I was feeling horrible and practically took twice the usual amount of time to get ready.

I get to the condo, he meets me at the lobby so we could "go to the parking lot together", and hastily pushes the button on the lift to his floor instead of the parking lot since he "forgot his wallet"... I open the door and see this...

"You're crazy."

But I was honestly just super kilig! For a while, we didn't mind eating with our poor tonsils screaming in pain.

Our celebration was short and sweet. Just the way I wanted it to be.
:)

Seriously thankful that he's the total opposite of me- thoughtful, cheeeeesy and sweet. Everyone says that if I dated my male counterpart, we'd probably end up with our iPads and carrot sticks in front of the telly on our anniversary... Not that it's a bad idea (in my world, at least).

Oh, and there was supposed to be a cake with the statue of liberty on it. Would've died laughing if he really went for that!

((I just realized how my creativity during special occasions and gift-giving hasn't improved... Take for example 2 years ago- my dad and I greeted each other a happy birthday over breakfast (yeah we share the same birthday), I gave him 5 cans of Altoids and he gave me a head of a Moriones soldier. FUN!))
